need advice on modelling strategy/tools to use

Once you trim to get the blue part, use surface offset with thickness enabled. Extrusion will not follow surface normals precisely.

    iMac Pro

Ok I spoke to one of the developers and in a nut shell, Yes, the new iMac Pro will be faster in rendering. If you are primarily using Evolve for modeling, then the cost might outweigh the purported benefits.

    iMac Pro

Evolve uses Thea rendering engine for rendering(includes interactive rendering). Thea works best on NVIDIA CUDA supported cards. Thea's Presto render - a physically accurate rendering engine works only with CUDA technology. However, GPU is not fully utilized when modeling. The program relies more on your CPU and number of cores.

    iMac Pro

Hi Lunau, iMacPro is a new device and we are yet to run a full test on the same. As we all know, Apple no longer supports NVIDIA cards and Evolve rendering works best on NVIDIA cards that support CUDA. If rendering is a major part of your workflow, this might not be good news for you. Currently, AMD A-series APUs support GPU acceleration in Photoshop but thats about it. From what I gathered, there is no GPU acceleration akin to CUDA, yet. AFAIK, there will be no significant speed improvement right off the bat in 2018.
  7. Class A surfacing is a methodology and modeling technique. Evolve contains some concepts of class A modeling like curvature continuity but is not the ideal tool for creating flawless surfaces, like those you see on automobiles. The inherent quality of class A surface is its ideal CV distribution. Certain tools in Evolve are based on parasolid(same engine as solidWorks) and deliver undesired CV distribution that can later be partially redistributed. Evolve has construction history, that makes it hard to redistribute points while maintaining dependencies. Most programs like Alias, leader in Class A surfacing, requires you to delete the history before manual manipulation of CVs. However, the nomenclature is slightly flawed. Everyone knows that to achieve a class A surface, the underlying curve must be of the highest quality. Therefore, your curves must contain the least number of CV's and show smooth curvature. See image attached. If you use the top curve to create surfaces, the output will be low quality. The bottom curve has a very close shape but with better CV distribution. Hence, while creating curves, use the curve plot tool - shortcut -SHFT+CTRL(CMD)+P and check the quality of the curve. For product design, class A surfacing is not a mandate, unless you are talking about Apple, that is very particular on surface quality. You can achieve good surface quality in Evolve at the expense of time.

How to create solid bodies using loft feature?

Starting 2016, the Trim tool accepts multiple input surfaces and curves. No need to combine the input bodies. Always check whether the body is a solid using Analyze - 'Tolerance check' tool. This helps avoid failures downstream.

    Rhino newcomer

For wireframe resolution settings use CTRL+SHIFT+D and click custom. Here set the max and min to 1. To explode single lines and bodies. Use Edit - Collapse construction tree then separate entities. To explode combined lines and bodies. Use Edit - Collapse construction tree, then Uncombine bodies and then separate entities. To simplify curves, it must have no history. Use rebuild and simplify curve tools. To add segments together, use join curve entities. For surfaces, use combine. Can you please share the file causing the rendering issue? The problem is most likely due to bunched vertices after the revolve. One way to solve it is to not align the center vertices of the Rounded poly line along the revolve axis. Yes, this will create holes on the top and bottom which can be patched using 'Patch'. Once patched, use combine to add all the surfaces together into a single body and then assign material.

    Anyone using animation tool successfully?

Hi, My sincere apologies for not getting back earlier. We are working on new animation tutorials for 2018. I have created a short video showing the basics of how to animate objects in Evolve. For more details on the animation panel and its detailed functionality, please refer to our help section. castor.mp4

How to set up image planes?

Hi Peter, We do not have an option to enable images in 3D viewport currently. The work around is to apply the image as a texture but this is only visible in interactive rendering mode.
  14. Hi Steve, You can delete all the objects in the scene except the cameras and save the file in 2016. Use File-Import/merge option to import this file into your new scene in 2017. The cameras will be added to your new scene. I suggest naming the cameras so that you don't have duplicates after merging.

Wrap curve around Surface (Stretch tool alternative)

Hi Nick, There are two tools to deform objects in Evolve that suit this use case and both options rely on a target surface. You have already found the stretch tool. The other is called surf-drape. In your example, the target surface is a lot smaller than the source curve. I am thinking this might be forcing Evolve to fit the source surface within the boundaries. To create a 3D curve, you can use the project curve option.

    Render Q

RenderQ is installed as part of the main program. PC: Look under C:\Program Files\Evolve\,,version number>>\Evolve\Bin\win64 for the main application executable if you cannot find it under installed programs. MAC: rQ will be installed under the application folder where Evolve is installed.

    Maya Navigation Shortcut ?

Hi, You are not doing anything wrong. This is a limitation of the program. Version 2017 does not support assigning mouse clicks. Unfortunately user is limited to modifier and/or key combinations only.

Objects that are not part of a construction history can be hidden using the H key. The message you see pops up when you try to hide a source object. To avoid running into this message more often, I suggest using layers and hide them.

Jon, The Tween between curves tool is not available in Evolve. We have a request to add this kind of tool in place.

    Surface offset issue

This is a common problem that unfortunately cannot be fixed with a magic wand, i wish. As you can see in the attached image from solidworks, this issue exists long before you did the combine and round. I am comparing to solidworks to prove that this is not a problem with Evolve but a generic parasolid behavior. Offsetting the source objects itself creates a mismatch with boundaries. One way to fix this issue is to build the interior surface just like you build the exterior and then create lofts between them. The second rather tedious and unpopular way is to delete the construction history of the offset and rebuild it. I will try to send you a file with a rebuild geometry by tomorrow.

absolutely need to change the UI font size !

The font size can be adjusted by using the Help-Preferences menu on PC. Under User Interface tab, you will find the font size option. Please see screenshot below. Font size does not apply to some pop up tool windows like Curve plot, surface curvature, view detail and so on.

    Surface Continuity - A Comparison

Hi Steve, I took a look at your file. If you turn on the ' Arc length profiles' and 'Arc length rails' option, the issue should go away.
